How does one’s gender define one’s identity?

on May 8, 2012

Gender is a range of characteristics used to distinguish between males and females, particularly in the cases of men and women and the masculine and feminine attributes that they possess.

The fact is that we grow in a society that from our birth provides our behavior. It is expected that girls are kind and gentle. They have to play with dolls, to go on dance classes and to play an instrument. Therefore girls are supposed to study more and to help in house work.

On the other hand boys don’t have to cry. They have to be the shooter. They have to fight sometimes with their friends. It is normal if they come home dirty and beaten. Their toys are cars, weapons or soldiers. Not to mention that they are supposed to practice football, basketball, .. and other ball sports.

I think that gender defines our identity but perhaps stronger influence on our behavior and identity has the family and surroundings with it expectations in which we grow up.
